Q: Exactly, how does a class work?
A: Our classes are “hands-on” – you will be cooking! After a brief introduction, we break into groups and each group prepares part of the menu with the guidance of our trained culinary professionals. You will be encouraged to wander into the other groups to see what everyone else is making. We’ll enjoy a glass of wine as we feast on the entire meal together.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: No, just your enthusiasm – we have everything you need. But be sure to wear comfortable clothes and close-toed comfortable shoes (think knife dropping!)

Q: Should I eat first?
A: No! Save your appetite! Our classes finish with everyone enjoying the wonderful meal they’ve prepared. However, if you are enrolling in the “Knife Skills” class you may want to eat a little something first; we spend most of the time chopping and we’ll only be dining on Gazpacho!

Q: I really don’t know anything – will I feel intimidated? Do I need to know anything about cooking before I attend a class?
A: No, no, our well trained chefs are kind and patient. They will help you at whatever level you happen to be! The classes are designed so everyone feels comfortable and joins in the fun. To feel more comfortable, if you can, take “Knife Skills” first.

Q: Can I bring my own wine?
A: Not necessary! We serve a glass of wine with our meal. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own. We just ask that you wait until the hot pots and sharp knives are put away before you partake (it’s scary for our chefs!).

Q: Are there certain classes for beginners and some for the more advanced?
A: All our classes are geared towards all levels. However, if you are a real beginner you might want to try our “How to Boil Water” series. This series is designed to teach you all the basics you need to make you feel more comfortable in the kitchen. For the more advanced, you’ll learn lots from most of the other classes.

Q: Is there parking available?
A: Yes, There is metered 2-hour parking right in front. After 6:00 PM you can park there with no problem. There is also a free 3-hour parking lot located on Forest Avenue right behind A la Carte. (See Map)

Q: I signed up for a class and now I have to cancel. What happens?
A: Let us know 3 days or more before the class and we’ll give you a class credit you can use anytime. Since we turn down people when the class is full, and shop and staff up as well, there are no refunds with less that 3 days notice. (Sorry!)

Q: Do I have to pay in advance?
A: Yes, we take payment on registration to reserve your spot in the class.

Q: I want to get a certificate so that I can work in a restaurant. Can I get one at A la Carte?
A: A la Carte is a recreational cooking school designed to teach real people to cook better at home for their friends and family. It is not a certificate program. But before you pay lots of money and spend lots of time in a vocational school, why not take our basics program to get yourself started and find out if you really have the passion it takes to work in a kitchen? Our summer “Junior Chef’s CAPS” program was designed specifically for that purpose.

Q: My daughter/son loves to cook. What do you have for her/him?
A: At age 8 we start our kids in “Junior Chef”. We usually have several running in each brochure. If they are younger, join us in “Grown-Ups and Kids” or “Dads and Daughters” – you will be cooking with them, so if you think they have the attention span necessary for a class, they are more that welcome at any age.
